A defining moment in my career
My career-defining moment presented itself in the form of a blessing in disguise. In 2001, after having graduated from WBS, I resigned my nine-to-five office job and decided to pursue my music passion.

My first single, “Hurts So Bad,” went to number one on South African radio and I became an overnight success, much to my own disbelief and amazement. I was soon headhunted by the biggest record company in the world, Polydor in the United Kingdom. I was signed to an unprecedented deal the likes of which the South African music business had not seen.

Twelve months later, on the verge of what looked like huge international success I was dropped from the label. A series of unfortunate events led to my returning home with my tail between my legs. It was then and there that I decided that I would be the master of my own destiny and no longer put my career in someone else’s hands.

My education at Wits and my understanding of business gave me the confidence and compelled me to set up my own label, management company and publishing house, namely J23 Productions Publishing and Records CC. It’s a structure that led to my greatest success and my greatest freedom. All of this would not have been made possible without my tertiary education and the massive failure of my international record deal.

It’s not easy to pinpoint one defining moment. There have been a number that has shaped the person and professional I am today. One person (and series of events) that stands out was a young patient of mine during my internship year as a junior doctor.

I used to try candy-coat things, but no longer: giving birth is less painful, less bloody and infinitely quicker than getting your first novel published. If you haven’t been smothered under the avalanche of “Dear Author, Thank you for your submission, but …” slips by the time you find a publisher, you and your manuscript will still have to face the pitiless glint of your editor’s scythe.

The defining moment of my career was when I left a successful career in the corporate world to join a few ex-colleagues and friends in starting a new bank. This was a daunting move after having spent most of my career in a world where complex challenges were sheltered by the relative security of size, then moving to another world of complex challenges with no security.

After coming back from South Africa to Germany I started my career at Mercedes. I had the great opportunity to work for a well-known company and brand. I made a corporate career by going through different projects, functions and divisions. But after some years I had doubts that the corporate career path was the right one for me.
